My Favorite Book. Of All Time. Forever.
Books are very underestimated in the advanced world we are living in today. I, however, have discovered a newfound love for books during the past year. Though I love many books, Of Mice and Men is favorite. I read it last year, in Mrs. Patil's english class. The reason why I love it so much has a lot to do with the way my teacher approached the book, and the points she put emphasis on while reading it. However, the book in itself is written so beautifully and simply, that it is hard not to fall in love with the way John Steinbeck viewed and portrayed friendship. In this novel, George and Lenny are an unlikely pair that are evidently dependent on each other for survival. Their relationship becomes so strong and loving, that even death cannot come in between them. George knows what is best for Lenny, who is slightly slow, but he finds him to be somewhat of a nuisance or burden in his life. However, towards the end of the book, he realizes how much their friendship means to him, and how not only Lenny is dependent on him, but he also is dependent on Lenny. The theme of friendship has a very strong place in my heart, because I know the value of a loyal friend who is always at your side, no matter what. To go through what George went through in order to save his best friend is unimaginably difficult. To pull the trigger on the one person you know will love you no matter what for their own good seems unreasonable, but George's reasons are all valid, once they are thought through. I love this book, because it makes me realize the true value of friendship, and reminds me of how lucky I am to have people I can trust and rely on in my life. Whether it be providing a ride home, or pulling the trigger, friends truly help you capture the essence of the beauty of life.
